Magnesium is actually surprisingly one of the minerals that most of our population is deficient on . According to wellness mama. com upto 90% of the population are not meeting the requirements for magnesium .
For women in particular it could be helpful as a factor that helps balance hormones. But for most of us it helps regulate muscle function and assists in balancing other minerals such as potassium, vitamin D3, and calcium . It is also good to note that too much calcium may lead to decreased levels of magnesium .
What may also contribute to lower levels of magnesium include diuretics and caffeinated drinks (such as teas and coffee) because magnesium is mostly found in the bones and vital organs like the kidneys . So as you can see, we may be depleting our magnesium stores on a daily basis and therefore need to frequently replenish .
Recently after being reminded that most of our population is deficient in this essential mineral I decided to switch up my morning superfood smoothie to accommodate more magnesium. Here’s one recipe I used to make 2-3 servings.
1 -1, 1/2 banana
1-2 cups of frozen blueberries
3 tablespoons of hemp hearts
2-3 tablespoons of chia seeds
3 tablespoons of cacao nibs
1 teaspoon of spirulina
1 teaspoon of coconut oil
1 – optional serving of vanilla protein powder (I personally love Garden of life’s raw sprouted protein powder + probiotics)
Optional: 1 handful of cashews or Goji berries
Why I like this recipe Cacao nibs and spirulina is because they are both excellent sources of magnesium . Hemp hearts, Goji berries and cashews are also a great source of magnesium .
Scientists have also found that Magnesium coupled up with calcium increases its absorption therefore the chia seeds and cashews both supply the needed calcium for increased absorption . The potassium in bananas helps as well 🙂
So if you have been experiencing magnesium deficiency symptoms such as eye twitching, muscle cramps, low energy, insomnia or homornal imbalance try adding this smoothie to the beginning of your day and see if you notice a difference .
What’s your favourite morning smoothie recipe and why ? do share ….
